3D Printed... Astronauts!?

As most of you have heard by now, Gravity is a film that pushes the boundaries of CG. The visuals in this film are both mind blowing and realistic at the same time. Well what you probably didn't know is that 3D printing had something to do with that.

Oscar-nominated film Gravity featured 3D printed astronaut helmets custom fit to the actors measurements. Filmmakers took advantage of 3D Systems Quickparts to quickly bring their 3D model designs into life.

Nick Lewis, General Manger at Quickparts UK, comments, “It was a straightforward and satisfying job. We love showing customers how usable and strong these parts are, straight out of the machine.”

It's great to see more films incorporating 3D printing into their films, one can only imagine in the future entire sets being created by 3D printing them. Just like something out of a sci-fi movie!
